LearnLab develops digital learning tools for deep learning. We had a chat with Jarl Inge Wærness, Content Director, about how they are developing the tools for deeper shared understanding of key ideas in the curriculum, their motivation behind Learnlab and the key challenges.

Can you describe briefly what LearnLab do?
LearnLab AS is a Norwegian company that has research, development and delivery of consulting services and digital learning tools as its core business. The company was established in December 2016 to develop applications for future-oriented interactive learning. The founders have 20 years of experience in establishing products and services in the education market, and have also established two companies previously in the same market successfully.
On January 1st 2018, LearnLab launched technology and content that helps students, teachers, educational leaders and other facilitators to learn deeper through more co-creation and engagement. We have already over 60.000 users. The digital platform can be used to create and share lessons and courses that stimulates deeper learning. The platform is free to use and places great emphasis on interaction, activity and co-creation. The goal is to contribute technology that makes students, teachers, leaders and facilitators to producers of knowledge more than just consumers. The tool can be used by school owners, school leaders, teachers, students and other facilitators.

How does your product work? or What type of services do you offer?
Based on new learning needs at a time when technology changes society and our view of education and learning faster than ever, LearnLab develops digital tools that stimulate more deep learning; developing deeper shared understanding of key ideas in the curriculum through problem solving, creative and critical thinking, self-regulation, communication, collaboration, digital learning, and strengthening of basic skills. Our technology is developed into an application that provides access to updated content, such as high-quality learning processes, and stimulates users to create and share their own content. The content is presented as interactive steps in ways that increase engagement, for example, by the students expressing their responses, questions and reflections along the way during the learning session, in conjunction with an idea on the step via their smartphone, tablet or laptop. The facilitator can choose between a range of different digital interactions, such as word cloud, multiple choice, open question, rubrics, video and image cloud.

What do you want to change?
The main reason why we founded LearnLab is the lack of deep learning technology combined with relevant content that engages. We believe that the next major revolution in learning technology is time-saving and really engaging use. Companies that are able to give time back to their customers will grow. LearnLab combines high quality content with state of the art interactive technology in ways that makes it easier for students, teachers, leaders and facilitators to create better digital involvement in learning processes. Thus, for example, smartphones can be used in the classroom in a motivational way, rather than forbidden, which is a widespread practice in today’s classrooms.

Why did you choose edtech?
Today’s technology has great opportunities for learning and development. With pre-developed and generic components, as well as open software, we can relatively quickly further develop LearnLabs reliable, fast and easy-to-use platform. The platform is stored in a cloud service.
