Meet our members: Basic eSolutions

Basic eSolutions provides e-learning for mathematics within K-12 for the Norwegian and North American market. We had a chat with Svein Fagereng, CEO and founder, to talk about his company, ambitions, and how they work to save schools and kindergartens time and money so that they can focus on educating children.


Can you describe briefly what Basic eSolutions do?
Basic eSolutions is an edtech company developing e-learning for mathematics within K-12 for the Norwegian and North American market. Combining educational content with the appropriate technology is our strong suit.

How does your product work?
The product we offer on the Norwegian market is a full product range of mathematics e-learning from grade 8-12, including a system for exam preparation. Based on this development and market experience we will launch our Exam Prepper system in the US market in April this year for grade 6-8. The system is based on the US Common Core standard. Users will be children and our customers are parents and teachers.

What do you want to change?
We will offer a fast and simple web based solution suitable for “Generation Z”, that works just as well on any surface, such as desktop, tablets and smartphones. This will be an efficient tool for preparing for the math exams. Our product is not meant to replace schools or teachers, but be a supplement for those who need to improve their results, and be better prepared for the next exam.

Why did you choose edtech?
We have worked within the edtech industry for more than 30 years, and started aiming at the international market in 2015. In particular the English-speaking market, which is 150 times bigger than the Norwegian market. Norway has 800.000 potential users within the K-12 market, while the US market has 62 million potential users. The whole English-speaking market surpass 135 million users.

What do you see are the biggest challenges in this market?
The US market is highly competitive. However, with digital marketing it is possible to reach both users and customers. We have our own digital marketing company, Faerder Marketing. We have collaborations with other edtech companies, such as Kahoot! and Claned, for both technology and marketing purposes.

What is your next big steps or ambitions?
Our next step is to launch the complete K-12 system e-learning for math, developed around a PLE, Personal Learning Environment, which take use of AI. This will take us to the “next level” in edtech terms, and provide the kids with a comprehensive toolbox. We are seeking a dedicated investor to make this happen. Until now we are self-financed.

In what way has being a member of Oslo Edtech Cluster made a difference for you?
Oslo Edtech Cluster have been a door opener for us into the edtech industry. Through the cluster we have met many of our technology and marketing partners. We met our Finnish technology partner Claned through visits to Finland with the Cluster. We are also getting very good support in the efforts to attend the SXSWedu 2018 and Nordic Pitch.

How many employees do you have?
We are 5 full time employees. In addition we have consultants.

Which stage do you say your company is at? Growth? Well established?
We are a growth company.
